What’s to come at WordCamp for publishers 2019

We can’t wait to get started in Columbus this week at WordCamp for Publishers. As a Gold sponsor, we’re excited for and proud of every one of the sessions that’s taking place, but we’re particularly looking forward to two talks, each by one of our fabulous team members. If you’re going to be there, you can’t miss Beyond the Metabox: How Gutenberg Can Bring the Editorial Experience to Life by Kevin Fodness, our Director of Software Development, at 11:15 am on Wednesday, or, at 2pm on the same day, Senior Software Developer Davis Shaver’s discussion on Real publishers, real problems, real opportunities.

Since it’s just SO far away (three days is a long time to wait!), we thought we’d share some quick thoughts from each of our speakers as a preview for the event. Let’s start with Davis:

  • What are you going to be talking about?
  • I’m going to be discussing the tech stacks in use at fifty startup local news sites across the country, and drawing some conclusions about what the common problems and opportunities are.
  • Why shouldn’t someone miss your talk?
  • If you care about local news, you’ve got to learn more about how to make it work!
  • What are you most interested in seeing/learning at WCPUB?
  • I’m excited to catch up with the amazing community of engineers, designers, product managers, editors, and more who come out to WordCamp for Publishers!
  • What’s your one conference tip for WCPUB attendees?
  • Don’t be afraid to start a conversation with someone you only know from Twitter or WordPress Slack. They will be excited to meet you!

And now, Kevin!

  • What are you going to be talking about?
  • How the editorial experience in WordPress can be dramatically improved by using custom blocks and sidebars in Gutenberg instead of using metaboxes.
  • Why shouldn’t someone miss your talk?
  • It will change your fear of adopting Gutenberg to excitement!
  • What are you most interested in seeing/learning at WCPUB?
  • Integration strategies with GraphQL and how GraphQL compares to the REST API in performance.
  • What’s your one conference tip for WCPUB attendees?
  • Be present! Go to as many sessions as you can, talk to as many people as you can. The office will be there when you get back.

What questions do you have for the speakers of WordCamp for Publishers? Let us know on Twitter at @alleyco and maybe we can help get them answered! And, once the conference starts, please come say hi at our booth, or just around the event – we’d love to get to know you.
